The Art of Kettuvallam

The traditional South Indian houseboat, or 'Kettuvallam', is a marvel of engineering. 'Kettu' means 'to tie' and 'Vallam' means 'boat'. These boats are held together using coir knots, without a single nail used in the hull construction.

The hull is made of wooden planks (usually 'Anjili' wood) tied together with coconut ropes and coated with black resin made from boiled cashew nut shells. The roof is made of bamboo poles and palm leaves, providing natural cooling.
